Having Type 2 diabetes is a serious matter, but rather than think of yourself as a victim of diabetes, think of yourself as a person who has choices to make. When you do not control your blood sugar and your weight, it allows other serious medical complications to creep in. One of these is hypertension or high blood pressure. Having either Type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure can be a serious health issue on their own, but having both conditions can spell major trouble.
Diabetes and hypertension are closely related. High blood sugar levels cause the walls of your blood vessels to become damaged. They also impact your heart and your entire circulatory system. This raises your blood pressure reading above the normal reading of 120/80 mmHG.
One of the problems associated with hypertension is the same problem often associated with Type 2 diabetes: detection. So many people go through life unaware they have Type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. What they often don’t realize is if they have hypertension and are overweight, they often have Type 2 diabetes as well. This is why early detection is very important. The longer you have either condition, the more damage you are subjecting your body to.
Being able to catch these conditions early will help to prevent placing your body under unnecessary stress and damage. It has been found fewer heart-related complications and a lower death rate occurs in diabetics who tightly control their blood pressure. Controlling blood pressure is just as important as controlling your blood sugar when you have received a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes.
It is really important you see your doctor on a regular basis and not just when you are ill. Both hypertension and Type 2 diabetes can lay undetected in your body for long periods of time. Unfortunately, just because you are unaware it is present in your body doesn’t stop the damage from being inflicted.
The same rules for managing and reducing the risk of hypertension are the same rules relating to controlling your blood sugar:
Eat healthily: Consuming a diet containing fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains, will help give your body what it needs and keep out what it doesn’t.
Eat the proper portions: Although lean protein is essential for good health there is still such a thing as having too much of it. So, just imagine how unhealthy too much fat, salt, sugar and carbs can be. You have to know what a healthy portion of each type of food is, and how many portions you can safely eat each day.
Exercise: The importance of this should be self-explanatory. Exercise acts like insulin… it helps lower your blood sugar.
