“A person is what he eats” a famous quotation holds even truer when the point comes of diabetes. The diabetics have to make careful choices of foods in order to make sure that diabetes does not cross the normal blood sugar level range. This signals that diabetics need to reduce the intake of certain types of foods and consume the foods that are good for diabetics.
The diabetics must try to maintain their body weight and eat the diet that is
- Low in sugar content
- Low in fat content
- Low in salt content
- High in complex carbohydrates
- High in vegetables and fruits
There isn’t any type of food that diabetics should never eat. Further there isn’t the need of completely eliminating sugar. Diabetics should eat only small amount of sugary foods. So the diabetics can have a treat of biscuits and cakes but only once in a blue moon.
So what foods a diabetic must eat!
- Diabetic must consume plenty of fiber rich vegetables and fruits. Fiber rich foods lower down the insulin needed by releasing the energy into cells of the body gradually. High fiber diet provides more chromium that is good for the treatment of diabetes.
- Most vegetables like garlic, onion, radish, ginger, kale, spinach, tomato, cucumber and carrots are excellent for the treatment of diabetes. Kidney beans, moong and cooked unripe banana are also good.
- Fenugreek seeks soaked in water are excellent for the treatment of diabetes
- Many fruits like Indian blackberry, guava, fig, apples, kiwifruit, pomegranate and citrus fruits are good for diabetics. It is good to make these fruits the part of the breakfast.
- The table sugar must be replaced with honey, dates and palm sugar
- Sprouted grains and unpolished rice must be taken
- Peanut oil and olive oil are good for diabetics
- Drink plenty of water
- Single serving of seafood provides omega 3 fatty acid
- Seasoning like chili, pepper, spices and herbs are good for diabetics
- It is good to take large amount of raw vegetables.
- Nonfat dairy products are good; examples are nonfat cheese, nonfat yogurt and low fat yogurt.

- White sugar, processed foods, junk food and white flour must be completely eliminated from the diet. Stay away from glucose, cakes, fruit sugar chocolates, creams, soft drinks and fried foods
- The foods containing plenty of salt and too many preservatives must be avoided
- Stay away from alcohol and smoking
- Stay away from ice-cream, sweets and chocolates
- Rye, polished rice, pasta, cakes, pies and other things made of white flour are bad for diabetics
- Starchy vegetables like potatoes, peas and carrots are not good for diabetics
- Stay away from dairy products like kheer, khoya and cottage cheese
- Fruits like mango, banana, custard apple and strawberry must be avoided
- Stay away from packaged foods like chips, fast foods and other ready to eat foods
- Fruit juices must be limited as they are high in sugar content.
